Thunderbird Install "Catch-22"
Jan 14th 2013, 05:36

Hello:

Running KDE 4.8.5 on openSUSE 12.2 Linux 3.4.11-2.16-desktop x86_64 KDE 4.8.5 (4.8.5) "release 2"
AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 Processor - Video = C61 [GeForce 7025/nForce 630a]:

I have a bad install of Mozilla Thunderbird 17.02.2-49.27.2-x86_64 from Yast2 and am trying to uninstall to start over from scratch. Here's what I have run into - I'm a noob in this area, and am totally stumped:

Zypper search of installed packages for "thunderbird":

Code:

THISBOX:~ # zypper se thunderbird
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...

S | Name                                  | Summary                        | Type

which shows the "tracker-miner-thunderbird", a dependency when installing Thunderbird.
I tried uninstalling thunderbird, which should also uninstall the "tracker":

Code:

max@THISBOX:~> sudo zypper rm thunderbird
root's password:

So "packages" are "installed" when searched for. Uninstalling thunderbird did not uninstall the "tracker" because it is already "uninstalled", but when I look for "information" on thunderbird....

Code:

max@THISBOX:~> sudo zypper if MozillaThunderbird
root's password:

and "tracker-miner-thunderbird"...

They are both "Installed".
Checking repo data, zypper wants to uninstall whatever it finds in order to resolve verification:

Code:

THISBOX:~ # zypper ve

The following package is going to be REMOVED:
  tracker-miner-thunderbird

1 package to remove.
After the operation, 29.5 KiB will be freed.
Some of the dependencies of installed packages are broken. In order to fix these dependencies, the following actions need to be taken:

So they both show as "Installed" and "Uninstalled" - I think. This thing has me so confused that I don't know WHAT it's saying anymore. Since I can't seem to "uninstall" these "installed" programs, I decided to try "IN-stalling" them again so as to give it something to "UN-install":

Code:

max@THISBOX:~> sudo zypper in MozillaThunderbird
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
'MozillaThunderbird' is already installed.
No update candidate for 'MozillaThunderbird-17.0.2-49.27.2.x86_64'. The highest available version is already installed.

It's a long post, I know, but I'm going nuts. It's "Catch-22" - (or Schroedinger's cat?) - I can't install it, can't uninstall it, can't run it, and am dead in the water. Anyone know what I can do to get Thunderbird running again?

Thanks to anyone who can shed light....
