Is AMD Radeon HD 7570 really unsupported?
Jan 16th 2013, 16:18

I have a new Dell Optiplex 9010 desktop PC with an AMD Radeon HD 7570 graphics card inside, with OpenSUSE 12.2 64-bit, KDE, installed. When I boot and start running OpenSUSE, it stops at a message that says, "Started Postfic Mail Transport Agent". I rebooted, and selected the "recovery mode" in the GRUB2-EFI menu. The "Display Info" section of "My Computer" shows
Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
2D Driver: fbdev
3D Driver: Unknown Gallium (8.0.4)

I installed fglrx64_xpic_SUSE122 through the 1-click installer in https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AMD_fglrx, and restarted the PC. The installation seems somewhat successful, since I could start OpenSUSE under its normal mode (not just recovery mode). The "Display Info" section of "My Computer" now shows:
Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
2D Driver: fglrx

Two new problems arose, however: (1) While the screen had the normal resolution, the graphics response was very slow, e.g. simply dragging/moving an open application across the screen is very laggy/unsmooth, and (2) there is a semi-transparent box on the lower-right hand corner of my screen saying "AMD Unsupported Hardware".

In order to solve these, I firstly tried to update everything through "zypper up", and restarted. This solved problem (1). Also, the "Display Info" section of "My Computer" now shows:
Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
2D Driver: fglrx
3D Driver: ATI

However, the box on the lower-right hand corner of my screen saying "AMD Unsupported Hardware" still remained. I updated the Linux kernel from 3.4.11 to 3.7.2, but this didn't solve the problem.

I then tried the AMD Catalyst 12.10 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver as downloaded from support.amd.com. This method seems unsuccessful because when I select "Install Driver 9.002 on X.Org 6.9 or later 64-bit", since I get the message "Your graphics adapter is not supported by this driver. Installation will not proceed." If I select Generate Distribution Specific Driver Package > SuSE/SUSE-autodetection" and then run "aticonfig --initial", I get the message "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected."

How do I get rid of the "AMD Unsupported Hardware" message? Or does my failure to remove this perhaps mean that AMD Radeon HD 7570 graphics cards are currently not Linux-compatible, and that I should get another graphics card?
