opensuse 12.2 64 bit - slow internet / resolve host issue with software manager & default browser
Dec 7th 2012, 10:01

Hello,
I am currently preparing a move from my not longer supported Ubuntu 11.04 to something else. I am an Ubuntu user since long time but I cannot work with the Unity interface so I started recently a little research, like in the past (some 5 or more years ago) on what DE and distribution I would use. I have played with 9 distros, first on my ubuntu 11.04 machine with virtualbox and now with a bootable USB stick on a test laptop.

I like the OpenSuse installation. It is easy, clear and within the installation you can choose the DE (gnome, KDE, ...), meaning no need for several iso files to download and test.
I am now running OpenSuse V12.2 64 bit kernel 3.4.11 gnome 3.4.2 with the latest patches on an intel core2 duo T7100 with 4GB RAM.
I didnot pimp my OS or applications yet so it is fresh out of the box.
Everything seems to work nice and smooth but my all time favourite browser Firefox is very very slow on loading sites.
I checked already some threads but couldnot find any solution yet.

Pre-tests:
  • I did the test with wired & wireless internet connection but the result is the same, so at first sight it is not network hardware related
  • I turned off the software firewall on my laptop but no performance gain
  • I tried other browsers like epiphany( is even worse) and chromium (strange because this seems to be working)
  • I checked with gnome system monitor the network traffic but almost no traffic load

What I have checked so far:
  • loading pages (for example Yahoo!) with browser:
    • firefox message: looking up, ... waiting for Yahoo! --> after waiting for minutes finally loads the page but some parts on it are not loaded
    • Epiphany message: oops it was not possible to show this website. ... cannot resolve hostname (Yahoo!)
    • chromium: shows almost immediately the page

  • I guess the same problem occurs when using the Install/remove software (software management Yast).

After opening this app I got the message "cannot access installation media ... -> skip autorefresh?"
message: download 'curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse?org/distribution/12.2/repo/non-oss.content'; error code: connection failed; error message: could not resolve host: download.opensuse.org, name or service not known

It is not clear to me what could be the issue. I remember I read something about a name resolving, DNS issue on the newer Ubuntu version then I use.

Does someone have the same experience or know how to check more in detail for the problem and so providing a solution.
cheers,
Franky, a wanna be OpenSuse user
