desktop resize in remote vnc client, RandR issue?
Dec 10th 2012, 09:42

Hi all,
I'm running an 11.4 box that folk use VNC to access to run a bit of finite element modelling software. It used to run Fedora 13 but had to be updated to let us update the modelling software, 11.4 was as far as it could go (12 not supported for the modelling software). The users tell me when it was running Fedora 13 they could dynamically resize vnc their sessions (each user has their own persistent session launched with the vncserver command), but if that's tried in KDE under Size & Orientation in System Settings on the SuSE setup we get

"Your X server does not support resizing and rotating the display. Please update to version 4.3 or greater. You need the X Resize, Rotate, and Reflect extension (RANDR) version 1.1 or greater to use this feature."

I'm using the TightVNC that comes bundled with 11.4. On the console the resize feature works fine. Asking about RandR I get...

imsatlx:~ # xrandr --version
xrandr program version 1.3.4
server reports RandR version 1.3

VNC is all new to me, which isn't helping. I had a trawl for this but most of the problems seemed to be about Xinerama, which we're not (knowingly) using and nVidia issues (the server has an ATI card, but of course the problem isn't happening on the server itself, but on VNC clients on Windows boxes).

Any thoughts to resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

thanks, Pete.
