Problem with MP4 tags (VLC, Amarok, Dolphin)?
Nov 1st 2012, 05:19

Is it possible that openSUSE currently has some problems with mp4-tags (tried out 12.2, Tumbleweed as well as newer taglib-1.8 versions from some build service repo)? I'm running KDE 4.9 from the OBS, both with gstreamer and vlc phonon backend.

  • In Dolphin, m4a files are not displayed with detailed tag info, while mp3 files are still correctly displayed with all included meta infos.
  • Amarok picks up and plays m4a files, however, the tags are mixed up. Trying to edit them works for one session, when the collection is read in again the tags are wrong again (some work, some mixed up, some empty).
  • VLC often displays the encoder info (handbrake-rev123) as file information. This is similar to to Amarok problem, where very often at first the encoder info is filling up many mp4-Tags.

In fact, it was VLC where I noticed this problem first, however I disregarded it as tags are not so important for my videos. However, in music files it is pretty annoying. As I did all my tagging with Amarok only a few months ago, and all these songs are correctly displayed on my media devices, the tagging must have worked some time ago. But as soon as I edit tags nowadays, everything is mixed up.
