wifi compatibility, preparing to buy

I'm trying to find a pci-e x1 wireless card. I bought one on ebay but it got lost in its travels to USA from China.
But that got me thinking that I need to be sure about what I buy.
I had a D-Link DWL-G510 using ath5k but it seemed to be dropping packets or something because now that I'm using a cheap usb wifi, I'm getting better internet access. Its an Ralink RT5370 using rt2800usb. I also notice that this usb wifi adapter doesn't work out of the box in Ubuntu. (yay opensuse)

So anyway. I was wondering if ANY wireless card maker will work, just as long as it has the supported chipset?
I was also wondering if anybody could recommend a specific pci-e x1 wifi card. Is one chipset better than the other. My laptop uses ath9k and I'm happy with it. Is Atheros a good chipset?
Thanks for your time and info.

I've already looked at the HCL and didn't find it all that useful.sorry.
